Becoming Net positive for resource use means waste avoided, recycled or re-used will exceed materials used that are neither recycled or re-used or are sent to landfill.
As a real estate business we place significant demands on natural resources and manage large quantities of waste both within our asset management and development activities. We have a clear responsibility to ensure waste streams from our assets are minimised and diverted into the highest value waste stream possible, i.e reuse, and that any construction procurement done on our behalf drives demand for recycled content, reusable products and the highest standards in responsible sourcing.
Our reduction strategy for resource use is currently focused on operational waste from our assets. Using the standard waste management hierarchy we seek to minimise, reuse and recycle waste that we manage for our retailers.
Performance against short term targets
- Worked consistently with retailers to improve separation of waste at source
- Implemented on site sorting tables to improve separation of waste streams
- Installed two Bio-whales to increase the quantity of organic waste going to anaerobic digestion
- Developed relationships with re-use organisations to divert un-wanted food and hard-wear from the waste stream
- Updated our internal processes to ensure opportunities to re-use fit out are captured during leasing
- Set clear standards within our fit out guides to encourage the use of materials with recycled content and divert waste from landfill and waste to energy

Our progress
Our long term resource use target is for the business to operate on a Net Positive basis for resource use by 2030. This includes our operational and development activities. Achieving this means waste avoided, recycled or re-used will exceed materials used that are not recycled or re-used or are sent to landfill. Since setting this target in 2016 the business has made good progress in improving recycling, identifying re-use opportunities and increasing the quantity of recycled materials specified in our development activities.
